There He is LOL.
Here I am crying out loud.
It's petty. It shows my woeful lack of hip and cool.
But, I hate LOL. LOL is as moronic as it gets.
I don't mind GTG, for example, although I don't use it.
I'm sort of okay with no longer capitalizing letters at any place in a sentence... although these kinds of sentences look like mongrels. But I like mongrels, and fully intend to go to the pound and rescue a few, one of these days.
I understand that it doesn't matter that I hate LOL. But I thought I'd share WHY I HATE lol.
IF you have to cue in your reader that what you just typed is funny, then it isn't. LOL is a directive that is basically false, basically lazy, because it insists you be understood with the least amount of trouble...like not bothering to actually BE funny.
Humor CAN be conveyed by the words you choose, the order in which you apply those words to that pithy little sentence of yours, the creative use of punctuation.
The only time that LOL 'works' is when you need to cut to the chase of your true emotions while trying to be polite and upbeat about whatever the messy situation is you are in, but are too distraught to be understood. ie "I just got laid off. LOL."
What that really says is "come and rescue me quick before i commit suicide, because i'm not really LOL. i'm really crying in my beer which i just spilled all over the goddamn floor and onto my new pair of suede boots which I can't afford since i just lost my !%$^*&^*!!*^% job. LOL."
